In an interview with The Guardian on October 18, while promoting her Christmas album, the legendary singer , Cher expressed strong feelings about the 2024 presidential election.
“I almost got an ulcer the last time,” she said about Trump’s first election win in 2017. “If he gets in, who knows? This time, I will leave [the country].”
Cher has been critical of Trump ever since he entered politics. Both Cher and Trump are 77 years old, but they share little in common.
Over the years, she has called Trump many names, like “Nixon on steroids,” and said he doesn’t “care” and isn’t “very good at what he does,” as she mentioned in a 2020 interview with People.
On her social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Cher has frequently criticized Trump, calling him “President Troll” and comparing him to Adolf Hitler, a comparison she also made at a Hillary Clinton fundraiser in 2016.
This isn’t the first time Cher has said she would leave if Trump became President. At another Clinton fundraiser, she jokingly said she would have to “leave the planet” if Trump won the 2016 election, according to Page Six.
In The Guardian interview, Cher also shared her concerns about the political push against transgender people in the U.S. She mentioned that there have been about 500 attempts to pass anti-transgender bills in the country, with 374 currently active, according to Trans Legislation Tracker.
“I was with two trans girls the other night – and of course, my own child [Chaz, her transgender son],” she said. “I was saying, ‘We’ve got to stand together.’ I don’t know what their eventual plan is for trans people. I don’t put anything past them.”
Besides supporting LGBTQ+ rights, Cher has backed many Democratic candidates and was very active during President Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign. She helped raise almost $2 million for his campaign at a virtual LGBTQ+ fundraising event and even released a cover of “Happiness is Just a Thing Called Joe” from the musical Cabin in the Sky, changing the lyrics to support Biden.
Despite facing several court cases, Trump’s standing in the presidential election polls hasn’t significantly dropped. At a recent rally, Trump vowed to expand his Muslim travel ban to include refugees from Gaza if he is re-elected next year.
