Being in a shelter for an extended period can take a significant toll on a dog. Many shelters witness once-happy and hopeful dogs losing their spirits after enduring months of rejection.
Such is the case for Major, a dog at an Indiana shelter who has been “crying endlessly” after more than 260 days of waiting. Despite being rejected by his previous family, the shelter staff still believe there is a perfect family out there for him.
Major, a 4-year-old terrier/pitbull mix, is currently under the care of the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Indiana. He was found as a stray last summer. Shelter employees were able to contact his original owners thanks to his microchip, but despite promising to come for him, they never did.
Major has been in the shelter ever since. Despite the heartbreaking rejection, the humane society says that in the beginning, Major was in good spirits. They described him as a “sweet and sensitive” dog, a “true companion with a big heart” who loves to play and adores his Jolly Ball.
The staff called him a handsome boy and nicknamed him “Major Hunk” and “Major Heartthrob.” Unfortunately, not everyone recognized his great qualities. Months went by, and Major was constantly passed over by adopters.
Shelter staff say the constant rejection has taken a toll on Major’s once bright spirits.
“His spunky personality is dimming,” the humane society wrote on Facebook. “This once jolly, ball-loving boy now sits in his room and cries endlessly.”
The shelter has moved Major out of the kennels, which were causing him stress, and into the visiting room. However, they know the only real solution is to find Major a permanent home as soon as possible.
Major would thrive best in a family without young children or cats. While he can get along with other dogs, he doesn’t always know his own strength, so a meet-and-greet is recommended.
Although not every home is a perfect match for Major, there must be a family out there who would be the perfect fit for this sweet and playful dog. “If you’re ready to welcome a loving, strong, and playful friend into your life, Major is the one for you!” his adoption page reads.
If you are in the area and interested in adopting Major, you can fill out an application on his adoption page and visit the Humane Society of Hamilton County to meet him. It’s heartbreaking to see Major feeling depressed and losing his spirits after being in the shelter for so long. We hope he finds a new home as soon as possible!
