Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan have celebrated nearly 35 years of wedded bliss. Their journey began with the challenge of Fox’s Parkinson’s diagnosis early in their marriage. However, as three decades have passed, they have crafted a life together filled with love and laughter.
Michael J. Fox, a seasoned actor who initiated his career in the 1970s, catapulted to stardom with his role in the TV series “Family Ties.” Amid his enduring career, he discovered in Tracy Pollan not just a talented actress but also an exceptional life partner. Their enduring marriage of almost 35 years bears testament to their unwavering commitment.
Through thick and thin, this couple has only grown stronger, steadfast in their devotion to each other. Their challenges have not tainted the profound love they share.
Their enduring love story took an interesting turn initially, as Pollan’s initial impression of Fox was that of someone with an ego. However, they’ve come a long way since those early days.
However, when they had the opportunity to collaborate, her perception of him underwent a significant shift. It became evident that Fox possessed intelligence and a great sense of humor. In just two weeks of working alongside him, Pollan discovered his remarkable qualities.
The couple eventually tied the knot, but their marriage faced a formidable test in 1991 when Fox received life-altering news. One morning, Fox’s pinky finger began to tremble uncontrollably, prompting him to seek medical advice. A neurologist in Manhattan delivered the diagnosis of young-onset Parkinson’s disease. The actor led his wife to a quiet corridor and shared the devastating news.
Tears welled up, and they clung to one another, but Pollan reassured her husband that nothing had changed, for he remained the same man he was the day before. She was determined not to let that fact slip from their hearts.
What Fox holds dearest is the unwavering support of his wife. From the moment he disclosed his diagnosis in that corridor, she never viewed it as the end of their marriage. To this day, her perspective on him remains unchanged despite his battle with Parkinson’s.
During an interview with Willie Geist, who discussed Fox’s book “No Time from the Future,” Fox revealed that his father also grappled with Parkinson’s and emphasized that such an illness is not one that individuals endure in isolation. Thus, having Pollan by his side was an incredible blessing. “Having a partner is truly remarkable,” acknowledged the “Back to the Future” star.
Fox concealed his diagnosis for a while, attempting to bury it beneath the weight of alcohol and an overwhelming workload. He took on as many jobs as he could to escape from his reality.
At a certain point, he even resorted to hiding bottles from his wife. His dependency on alcohol became a way to numb his emotions, leading him to drift away from his family. The toll it took on his marriage was evident, and Pollan openly shared her apprehension about witnessing her husband’s self-destructive path. What troubled her the most, however, was the potential fallout from his addiction.
Pollan understood that this was far from an ideal way to live, especially for someone with children and a wife, but she recognized that the power to change rested with Fox.
The turning point in Fox’s realization of the extent of his alcohol addiction and its impact on his family occurred after a night out with friends. He returned home, collapsed on the couch, and passed out. While he slept, a can of beer spilled onto the floor, and when he awoke the next day, he discovered Pollan seated before him with their three-year-old son.
As his gaze slowly traversed the room, he hesitated to meet the eyes of his wife and child, anticipating anger, but to his surprise, he found not frustration but rather boredom in her expression.
Before Pollan walked away, she posed a poignant question, asking if this was the life he truly desired to lead. That lone beer on the floor marked the final chapter of Fox’s struggle with alcohol. It was the moment he resolved to embark on a journey of sobriety and personal transformation.
Fox articulated that “acceptance isn’t resignation.” In 2000, the actor wholeheartedly embraced his Parkinson’s diagnosis, allowing his family to share in his worries instead of shouldering them alone. He also established the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
His foundation was envisioned to bolster the efforts of other initiatives in their quest to find a cure for this debilitating disease that primarily targets the nervous system, resulting in tremors and mobility issues.
An additional source of inspiration for the foundation lay in Fox’s own defiance of the odds. When he decided to make his Parkinson’s diagnosis public, he had already lived with it for nine years, and doctors had predicted disability within a decade. Yet, after 25 years, he continued to work, defying expectations.
In this realization, Fox understood that his foundation had the potential to advance research and treatments, affording others the opportunity to enjoy a long and fulfilling life.
Through the highs and lows of Fox’s condition, Pollan and Fox have weathered the storm together. Their enduring strength is a product of granting each other the benefit of the doubt and holding the most positive assumptions in every situation.
People Magazine honored Fox as one of the kindest individuals, a sentiment his wife wholeheartedly supported. Pollan attributed her husband’s innate kindness to his upbringing, emphasizing that in any circumstance, Fox consistently prioritizes the feelings of others before his own. His remarkable self-awareness leads him to consider the impact of his actions on those around him, an attribute made evident during a period when he suffered multiple injuries, including broken cheek, arm, hand, and shoulder. It took him some time to recognize that his injuries also affected his loved ones, who were there to care for him. As a result, he made a concerted effort to be the best patient he could be for the well-being of his family.
While Pollan believes she has the most genuine of husbands, Fox holds his wife in high regard, describing her as a smart, loving, and fiercely protective family matriarch. The couple shares four children: Sam, twin daughters Schuyler and Aquinnah, and Esme.
Fox also expressed his pride in his wonderful children and credited his wife for their exceptional upbringing. Despite the challenges they’ve faced, he speaks of the joy in his life, even when others may find it hard to believe.
