Police canines play an indispensable role within any law enforcement agency, contributing significantly to vital police operations, such as the search for missing individuals. They hold a unique place in the hearts of their human counterparts, being both cherished pets and esteemed colleagues.
When the time comes for these remarkable dogs to pass on, it is only fitting that they receive a dignified farewell that acknowledges their life of dedication and heroism. This is precisely what a terminally ill K9 recently experienced, as fellow officers gathered to pay a heartfelt tribute.
Candy, a German Shepherd, had been a loyal member of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office since 2014, serving as their inaugural narcotics detection dog. Throughout her nearly ten years of service, she conducted more than 2,900 operational searches, resulting in the confiscation of 278 pounds of illegal narcotics, as reported by the sheriff’s office.
Candy shared a unique and strong connection with her handler, Master Deputy II Anthony “Tony” Natalzia. According to Natalzia, “She was my constant companion, accompanying me everywhere. These dogs become more than just working partners; they become like family.”
However, in recent times, Natalzia began to notice a change in the 11-year-old dog. Candy’s energy waned, and she developed a noticeable limp. Her appetite diminished as well. Concerned for her well-being, Natalzia took her to the veterinarian, where they made a troubling discovery. Candy was diagnosed with cancer, which had already advanced throughout her entire body.
Natalzia recalled, “It had reached her lungs, it had spread all over. The vet informed me that there was nothing that could be done, and I was utterly shocked – we had only gone in for a routine check-up.”
As Candy’s terminal cancer continued to progress, Natalzia recognized that the compassionate decision was to have her euthanized by a veterinarian. Before this final farewell, the beloved dog had the opportunity to bid goodbye to her fellow police officers.
On a Monday, the officers arranged a ceremonial departure for Candy, forming a procession along the corridors of the Virginia Beach Correctional Center. As she departed from duty for the last time, they stood in salute, visibly moved by the poignant moment.
Throughout the walkout, Candy clutched her cherished tennis ball tightly. Following this heartfelt gesture, Natalzia drove her to the vet, where she was gently put to rest.
Candy was scheduled for retirement this year, and Natalzia expressed his desire for more quality time with her in her post-retirement years. He shared, “You often expect to have some cherished moments with your dog after they retire, so I feel a sense of loss in that regard. But, as a responsible handler, I couldn’t allow her to endure suffering out of selfishness,” he conveyed to McClatchy News.
Although Candy will always hold a special place in his heart, Natalzia has taken on the role of handler for a new K9 named Pablo. He aspires to establish a strong and effective partnership with Pablo, similar to the one he had with Candy.
Such a heartfelt and poignant farewell to this heroic dog. Rest in peace, Candy ❤️💙
Please spread this touching tale in honor of this loyal K9.
